My first week in the US (back in July)

(Author’s note: This is a first in a series of blogs that I will write first in Spanish, then run through Google translate and post the translation in English. The original Spanish that I wrote will be at the bottom. There will be plenty of mistakes.)

(Additional Author’s note: Apparently this is also the last in the series, I never wrote another one, and even forgot to publish this one. Originally written in mid-July. Honestly, don’t bother reading. It’s quite dry.)

Google translation of my Spanish (a bit rough, I’m not quite the writer I am in English. ¡Tengo que practicar!)

I travel enough that a flight of fourteen hours is not very difficult. There are movies, I have my iPad with sudoku and crossword puzzles, and I can use the “Duolingo” app to practice on the plane.

But for me, the days after arriving are more and more physically difficult in the last two years. This time was not an exception, and there were other complications as well.

For reasons that are not clear to me now, I insisted to sleep on the night that I arrived in the apartment that I had rented, almost ten minutes away from where my mother lives. My sister accepted this request, and after arriving home, she gave me the key to the car so I could drive to the apartment.

Now it’s summer in Virginia, and it’s very hot. Each day is more than 35 C (~ 90F for Americans in the old system) and it is very humid. When I arrived at the apartment, it was clear that the air conditioning was not working well. When I saw the AC, the temperature was set to 75 F (~ 23 C) but the current temperature was more than 90 F (32 C).

I did not sleep that night. But, in the morning, all my bags were empty, and I knew where everything was in the rooms. I was grumpy and I was very tired.

And then I discovered that, although the contract start date was a week before, they were not ready for me. The people who work in the office are very nice, but they are not very organized.

It’s a very boring story with a lot of pain, and I’m not going to describe it, but the days after, the internet works, I have the keys to the gym, the access to the pool, and everything else.

Welcome.

But all that does not matter to me. I am here to spend time with my mother and my sister and her family. And every moment since I arrived was fantastic, and like a dream.

No dormí esa noche.
